While this is not the complete sock pattern, it is a guided tour
through the process of knitting a sock from the toe up. The
complete pattern is available for $4.00 plus shipping.

I use a set of 5 double pointed, size 3 needles for the worsted
weight sock. I prefer 6" Crystal Palace needles, as they are
dependable and quick to knit with.

The sample sock is made with Lion Brand Wool-Ease, which is
machine washable and dryable, but I have found that the 'Heather'
dyes tend to felt a bit after several trips to the dryer, so I always
wash in cold water and line dry.

Wool-Ease is 80% acrylic, and 20% Wool. The ball band
recommends size 8 needles, but for socks that wear well, a tighter
gauge is more effective. For a pair of socks, you will need two of
the 3 oz balls (197 yards). I prefer to use one ball for each sock
and have a small bit left over.
Step 1 - The Toe
This 'Star Toe' is very a very easy way to start from the toe and
knit up. I have found it to be the most comfortable toe design for
me.
With a worsted weight yarn, start with 6 cast on stitches. Increase
in the first stitch on each of 4 needles until you have enough to fit
the width of your foot.
The Gusset
This is a view of the side of the sock. From
this point, add about 2 1/2 inches to get the
total length of the foot. The next step will be to
knit the heel.
Steps 2 and 3 - The Foot and Gusset
Here the foot is knitted up to and including
the gusset. This view will be either the top of
the foot or the sole. The increases are
symetrical on the top and bottom.
The Heel with Picked Up Stitches
Here is the heel with picked up stitches. Now,
knit up and join with the gusset edge.
Step 4 - The Heel
The heel is triangular and is made with short
rows, decreasing at each end of the knit
rows.
Step 6 - The Cuff
Ribbing started - I like tall socks and will knit
the 3x3 ribbing, finishing with a crocheted
bind off.
Step 5 - The Ankle
The heel is finished when you reach the
marker you placed at the end of the gusset.
Now knit 20 or so rows in rounds and start
the ribbing.
